Mill Creek Windfarm

  • Bulk earthworks and environmental controls for the construction of new wind farm in steep and unforgiving territory.
  • 900,000m3 of earthworks completed within 12 months and over winter. This was in steep conditions.  Innovative construction methods allowed work to progress through winter.
  • 21 km of roading earthworks completed.
  • 160 decanting earth bunds constructed and maintained in very tricky conditions.
  • 26 turbine sites prepared.
  • Very challenging weather conditions.

 

Makara West Wind Windfarm

Bulk earthworks and drainage for large windfarm.

Earthworks

  • 675,000m3 of earthworks
  • Very steep ground
  • Hard rock encountered (R2)
  • Averaged 100,000m3 per month

Roading

  • Preparation of all subgrade in our works – approximately 15km of subgrade prep
  • Assisted in pavement laying
  • Maintaining roading surface during construction of wind turbines.

Erosion & Sediment Control

  • Very difficult access for construction of the erosion and sediment control structures
  • Structures had to last for over a year.
  • Maintenance of the structures occurred after every rain event

Drainage

  • Large drainage component to job
  • Laying of stormwater pipes from 300mm diameter to 1500mm diameter.
  • Installation of headwalls and outlet structures including all associated concrete work.
  • Extended an existing 1200mm twin culvert and relocated a twin headwall.
  • Manage existing stream so that we were not working in live water – diversions had to happen while culverts were put in place
  • Very steep drainage lines – 2 pipelines at grade of 1&1/2:1

Demolition

  • Demolition of riggers hut – timber construction with concrete slab.
  • Demolition of in ground septic tank and reinstate site to farm paddock

General Comments

  • Difficult windy site – extreme weather conditions
  • Dust minimisation was essential – we ran purpose built sucker trucks which sucked out grit traps and sediment control structures on a daily basis and respread this water to control the dust.

Tararua Windfarm Stage 3, Manawatu

Earthworks and stormwater drainage for stage 3 of windfarm construction including silt ponds, topsoil stripping and stockpiling, cut to fill, cut to waste, rockfill, removal of unsuitable, preparation of turbine platforms, undercut of turbine foundations, topsoiling and reinstatement, subsoil drainage, tirm and prepare subgrade for roads, concrete culverts, & table drains for roads.
