1963-1975
Rick and Tony started Goodman’s with 5 staff – owning and milking cows, site excavation, general agricultural work, site demolition and lowering railway tunnels.

1966
Awarded a contract with Housing New Zealand in 1966 for the Wellington region site works for state house subdivisions.

1973
Awarded the Mangaweka Viaduct contract for $1 million in 1973.

Company now with 70 staff – sub-division site work, hiring plant for the electrification of the main trunk railway line – lots of mistakes and learning.

1980-1991
1987 crash caused work and cash to dry up. A stressful and tough time to be in earthmoving.

1992
Business went into recievership.

1994
Rick started new business through the buy-out of his brother with the assistance of 20 investors (all paid back within 3 years). Increased from 10 to 65 staff and 10 to 150 machines. Focusing on work for trusted clients & doing a GOOD job.

1995
Awarded Bushy Park contract in 1995– first major job that stretched the company and provided the catalyst to secure further large scale contracts. Provided a huge learning curve, major stress point for Directors, valuable lessons in managing sub-contractors, developed job costing and contract templates, growth and development of the relationship with Higgins Contractors via Ken Howard.

Awarded Kaitoke contract. Another learning experience in dealing with adverse weather conditions, and a tragedy on site.

2010
Awarded NEIL industrial subdivision in Palmerston North as the recession was starting to bite! A much needed job on our books but at low rates. Learning experience – cost fluctuations are required at times like this. The job possibly would have been OK if material wasn’t so bad, quantities didn’t double, fuel didn’t double, and the job length didn’t double. Total loss significant. The effect of NOT having the job is hard to gauge.

2013
Awarded the M2PP contract, first Alliance based contract. Goodmans contracted for earthworks across the entire project. Growth point.

Working for an international company at Transmission Gully. Challenging contractual conditions. Experienced low staff morale.
